Its  not just what they show, its that is utterly stupid.  I'd understand and support it if it was done with an ounce of intelligence, but its such a mess.

Its a genre film, that said I did not find it stupid and can't think of a single moment where I rolled my eyes.  Certainly its not any smarter or dumber than Good Bad Weird or Bittersweet Life.
I’ve lied to men who wear belts. I’ve lied to men who wear suspenders. But I’d never be so stupid as to lie to a man who wears both a belt and suspenders.

I totally loved it.
Grade: B
I love your write-ups, worm, but your film grades always baffle me. :) Do you ever give out A's or is there no such thing as an A grade film for you?

I once had a screen writing teacher tell me there is no such thing as a "genre" film.  All films are of a genre.  I rolled my eyes a lot.  And I love Revenge films, I just hate the Korean ones.  I think one of the greatest revenge films is Get Carter.  While motivations are somewhat murky in that film, there is a moment of realization where the fog is lifted and immediately everything comes into focus.  The movie then moves forward with such assuredness and focus that I don't care that I know what's coming.  I Saw The Devil seems to only be interested in sensationalism, and selling a point that is so obvious and basic that I didn't need the movie.  It doesn't explore new territory, lacks the cleverness and twists of the revenge genre that Bittersweet Life can boast.  It just seems to be an exorcise in excess.

My grades don't really mean much to be honest :). That being said, I get a little worried giving out A's to movies I've only watched once. I recently watched Cocteau's Beauty and the Beast and that was an A- but only because I feel like I need to rewatch it to be able to give it an A.
My letter grades work a lot like a 10-point scale. So, a B is a 7/10 which means the film was well above average in my book. I should just start using numbers. Somehow a 7/10 sounds so much better than a B!

Better to risk underrating a film than to risk overrating it?

I don't really have any original thoughts to contribute I'd just like to add a YAY WORM!!!
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

Makes sense.

I think I tend to be more willing to let a first time viewing and my emotions along with that viewing affect my initial grade. With Looking for Eric, for example, my emotions after coming out of the film wouldn't allow me to give it anything but a straight A. :) I haven't re-watched it yet, but when I put together my end of the year list and I was thinking a little more analytically, I gave it a B+.

Four Lions (Chris Morris, 2010)

Comments I can understand what jbissell means when he compares it to 'In The Loop', but I thinking as well of the likes of 'Shaun Of The Dead/Hot Fuzz'. However its their level of incompetance and intelligence which will be exploited for laughs. There are some terrifc set pieces, both comedic one-liners and physical comedy, the crow, fessal and the sheep, Omar trying to buy a phone and snipers at the end of the film are the stand-outs for me. Just a funny film, which could join the likes of those mentioned in this review.

I Saw The Devil
Dir. Ji-Woon Kim

Grade F
I'm the biggest KJW fan on these boards, but this reaction does not surprise me.  I heard about the film on IFC Podcast and after hearing the plot description, was surprised they liked it.  I love him for his timing, performance and use of camera and lighting.  The trailer promises a lot of that (plus the cast is superb).  The plot, however, sounds like something Eli Roth thought up while watching too many Takashi Miike films.  KJW is not a torture porn filmmaker, but this sounds like the worst kind of torture porn.  Yet because it's him (and after the trailer) I am very anxious to watch this.

I Saw the Devil will be one of the year's most divisive films, and I can't predict which side of the fence I'll end up on.
