Ep IV had to stand on it's own because there was no knowing if another movie would follow it for sure. And it did stand on it's own.

There's no question Star Wars is going to go on for many more movies now though. It's a TV show pretty much. The episodes are now genuinely just episodes. There is no longer any requirement to have resolution of any kind or make it a quality self contained thing. The object now is to make an enjoyable episode that finishes not with and ending but with teasing a whole bunch of exciting things to stay tuned for. And as TV shows go I don't think the have any good core idea... it's just a bunch of fan service and rehashing stuff and now that the ball is already rolling nobody is going to be able to steer it anywhere interesting.

I like EP IV because it is a good MOVIE. I can watch just that film and be satisfied. I like the original series too. I can watch all three and it's even greater than watching just EP IV alone. But Ep VII is not really a satisfying movie, it is a satisfying episode... we'll see where it goes I guess but I don't really have any faith it'll reach the awesome heights of the original series. I think it'll be one Abrams romp after another until people tire of it and then they'll reboot the mofo.

Talk to one person and Ep 7 was too much like Ep 4. Talk to another and it wasn't like it enough. Talk to anybody and they draw very big conclusions from 2 movies. If Ep 8 is full of Rian Johnson-y goodness, what kind of speculation will be downed from that? Will fans even allow it to be great? I've seen two solid movies nitpicked to death, especially given how wonky the OT is.

But at least it was original...

I disagree with smirnoff that VII was not satisfying on its own. It has an arc, it tells a story. Maybe not the best story, but there is a beginning and an end. It is not the most close-ended movie ever, and it is certainly more open than IV, but V ends with the promise of a new episode to rescue Han and finally defeat the empire, and I am pretty sure 'noff likes that one too, so you can't hold that against it that much. If you're going to tell a three part story, I would rather all movies fit neatly together, with connections and all, instead of being afterthought additions, like V was when the producers realised how much money was in the series.

Most likely the case. Curious to see if/how he would've channeled Vangelis for some of 2049.

My guess is Blade Runner wasn't feeling blockbuster-y enough. The article says mother! was a mutual decision.

I didn't even know they were making a new one. Is it meant to be a sequel to the del Toros?

Sad about Johannsson.
