Avoid Jules and Jim, as much as I love Truffaut, it's an awful movie.

You know, I try not to get involved in "opinion vs. fact" debates.  I don't think people necessarily need to couple their views with a humble "I think" or "IMO" all the time.  But when a film is #45 on the They Shoot Pictures, Don't They? 1000 Greatest Films list (compiled by aggregating hundreds of other "top ###" lists), I think that terms like "avoid" and "awful movie" could be tempered a bit.

I disagree, if it's what I think of the movie it's what I think of the movie. Maybe you should temper everything you have to say about every movie that is considered great that you don't like. Or, maybe in the interest of better discourse you should offer what you actually think, just my two cents.

Bill, in this case you didn't give an opinion, but a command.  At best, it was a suggestion.

J and J wasn't to my liking, either, but I wouldn't dissuade someone else from watching it, given the love it often receives.

I will say, though, that I think it has turned my wife away from French cinema.  I am trying to convince her that they're not all like that.  She's not sure she believes me.

I still gave an opinion, my opinion based on someone asking what they should watch from a director. It's no different than if I asked what Godard I should watch next and someone replied, "Film Socialisme, I like Godard a lot, it's an excellent movie." It's an opinion, an opinion that is, as you said, offering a suggestion based on the context of the question asked and the topic posted in. The difference is, because my opinion is negative, it's jumped on.

I didn't care for The 400 Blows, not one bit. What are some of the others well known Truffaut's? I don't wanna see more of that kid life, so those are out.
Fourthed on Shoot The Piano Player really start there it is bravura film-making.
The Last Metro is a really great wartime Paris film with a wonderful Deneuve-Depardieu ambivalent relationship and a wonderful false ending.
Day For Night is Truffaut's how-to on directing and the esprit de corp of film-making.
The grown up Doinel films are just lovely and surprisingly comedic since T400B is so damn hard at times. That's Stolen Kisses, Bed and Board & Love On The Run.
It is easier to list the bad ones to be honest but let's not open that J&J wound any further (but Bill is totally correct in his opinion and how he expressed it).

Except I don't think anyone can possibly answer that with a straight face.

I'll try to get "Shoot the..." and "Jules et Jim". oman,

Actually, I think it's more akin to you saying "You should see Transformers 2, it's excellent."  It may be excellent to you, but you would probably admit that it isn't excellent to many people.

It isn't the negativity that is objected to.  It is the extremity of the statement in comparison with general opinion.

Also Bill, that wasn't the question asked at all. He didn't ask what Truffaut movies were good, just which were well known. Even if he had asked which Truffaut movies were good it still wouldn't really be appropriate to simply disaude him from watching a specific one.
I actually consider a lot of movies to be life-changing! I take them to my heart and they melt into my personality.

Should I hold out for Film Socalisme or just watch some other Goddard first?

Well, depends on which Godard period you're talking about. Modern Godard is very different from 60s Godard. Or so I hear.
