50/50 (Jonathan Levine, 2011) [OS]
It's not best picture material or anything imo but I found it pretty charming especially because of the cast.

Carlos (Olivier Assayas ,2010) [OS]
This is long but fun especially if your parents like thrillers / political intrigue type stuff.

The Interrupters (Steve James, 2011)
I found this rather heart-wrenching and it might make the whole atmosphere a bit sombre but it's also inspiring and hopefully a huge contender for the filmspots best doc.

Nader and Simin, A Seperation (Asghar Farhadi, 2011) [OS]
I don't see why not.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Rupert Wyatt, 2011) [AS]?
I thought it was a blast. I think you'll enjoy it too, 'noff :)

Senna (Asif Kapadia, 2010) [OS]
Another great doc. Doesn't even need familiarity with Senna or F1 imo.

Take Shelter (Jeff Nichols, 2011) [OS]
Yuki & Nina (Hippolyte Girardot, Nobuhiro Suwa, 2009) [OS]
Both good, well-made family dramas that are intense but engrossing and perfectly suitable for family viewing as far as I recall.

Le Havre should be on this list unless I forgot to nominate it. Regardless, I'd vote for that one over all of these. It's funny and charming and musical and I'd LOVE to watch it with my parents :).

These all look like fantastic films, great variety... it's going to be hard to narrow it down. I'd like to get to all of them, with out without my parents. Thanks for the recommendations both of you. I'll report the results sometimes after the holidays :)

Watching Norwegian Wood with your parents would definitely be uncomfortable.

I've only seen Melancholia on the big screen, but aside from the opening and closing, I'm not really sure there's too much else about it that makes it an essential big screen experience. I would have rather had the chance to see Antichrist on the big screen because that's a more visually striking film.

I'm really glad I made sure to see it in theaters. Sitting in my room alone watching my laptop was not the same at all.

The Artist (Michel Hazanavicius, 2011) [OS]
Jane Eyre (Cary Joji Fukunaga, 2011) [AS]
Meek's Cutoff (Kelly Reichardt, 2010) [OS]
Your mother would be impressed.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Rupert Wyatt, 2011) [AS]?
Source Code (Duncan Jones, 2011) [OS]
Your father would be grateful to watch these on a different TV.

The Artist jumps out immediately as a pick to watch with the family (unless they have a problem with it being a silent movie.)
Rango is also good for the whole family.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is a fairly tame PG-13.
Source Code is too.
Warrior would be another one.

I like 13 Assassins, but would hesitate watching a bloody samurai film with mom and dad.
Bellflower is a terrible pick from your list for family entertainment. The worst would be I Saw The Devil (though I do hope you watch it at some point) and Shame. I haven't seen The Last Circus, but I bet it's right down there.

I'm looking for stuff I could watch with my parents...  any good for the whole family type films in this list (it doesn't have to be completely innocuous mind you...)?

13 Assassins (Takashi Miike, 2010) [AS]
Attack the Block (Joe Cornish, 2011) [OS]
Certified Copy (Abbas Kiarostami, 2010) [OS]
I Saw the Devil (Jee-woon Kim, 2010) [OS]
Martha Marcy May Marlene (Sean Durkin, 2011) [OS]
Of Gods and Men (Xavier Beauvois, 2010) [AS]
Rango (Gore Verbinski, 2011) [OS]
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (Rupert Wyatt, 2011) [AS]?
Senna (Asif Kapadia, 2010) [OS]
Shame (Steve McQueen, 2011) [OS]
The Skin I Live In (Pedro Almodovar, 2011) [AS]
Source Code (Duncan Jones, 2011) [OS]

This is what I've seen from your list.
Fun with the family? Stay away from Shame, The Skin I Live In, 13 Assassins, I Saw the Devil, Martha Marcy May Marlene and I think Attack the Block.

Source Code is plenty of fun if you're willing to forgive some loony plot holes.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes won pretty much everybody over, including me. Unless your family hates animals, that should work.
Certified Copy is an extraordinary picture, even though it is, in essence, two people talking for about 90 minutes.
I kept Of Gods and Men on the list, but that depends on what you think your family might enjoy. It's really slow, but as a character piece, it's also very gripping and emotional.
Rango I found to be amazing, both from a visual and story standpoint, despite it being quite derivative in the latter department.

-Le Chiffre: You changed your shirt, Mr Bond. I hope our little game isn't causing you to perspire.

-James Bond: A little. But I won't consider myself to be in trouble until I start weeping blood.

Thanks so much guys, this guidance is super helpful!

For reference my dad's favourite film (or the one he now uses to benchmark everything) is Taken. :))

My mom, I have no idea... she never seems to strongly like or dislike anything. She usually knits through the whole movie anyways, lol.

In that case maybe I Saw The Devil is a good choice after all.

Really though, of the ones I've seen Source Code is probably the best choice given how you've described your parents.
