To celebrate Cannes and because I've got two weeks between semesters I want to watch a film by all directors in competition that I'm not familiar with (1 or 0 films seen). Anyone have any favorites from these they think I should check out?

Alex van Warmerdam
Amat Escalante
Asghar Farhadi (seen: A Separation)
Arnaud des Pallières
Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi
Abdellatif Kechiche
Mahamat-Saleh Haroun
Jia Zhang-Ke
James Gray (seen: Little Odessa)

James Gray: Watch his other 3 films. If you only can watch one, I say Two Lovers, but The Yards and We Own the Night are both great choices as well.

Agreed.

For Farhadi, Fireworks Wednesday is pretty good.

Agreed.

Thirded.  I highly recommend watching Games of Love and Chance (aka L'esquive) as well.
