Sukiyaki Western Django
Harakari
13 Assassins

Would the good folks at Filmspotting suggest one of the above, or a different film as a first Miike?

I'd start with AUDITION. Not only because it's my favorite, but also because it strikes a balance between Composed Miike and Crazy Miike.

I would recommend 13 Assassins. It's not typical of Miike's more notorious work, but it is well made and will give you confidence that this is a solid director with skills. Perhaps a cushion of goodwill if you choose to venture into some of his riskier filmography.

Agreed, it really is well made as was Hara-kiri: Death of a Samurai.  I hope he continues down this path.  I don't like a lot of his most notorious works but Audition is an exception.  What ever you do.. don't watch Visitor Q... it has been 10 years and I still can't get the bad taste out of my mouth...

Late 90's and early 00's are his most distinct period (Visitor Q is one of the more extreme examples, but it's good).

I wish this community would pledge to doing a Marathon of Kobayashi and Satyajit Ray in 2014.

I would do both of those!

I'll be watching more Ray films, that's for sure.  Probably Kobayashi too, given what 1SO has posted and other positive reviews I found online about his work.
Sara: Good-bye, father Isak. Can't you see you're the one I love? Today, tomorrow and forever.
Isak Borg: I'll keep that in mind.

Kill Your Idols

Just watch something on Netflixxx or VoD because these aren't that good/worth paying for?

Of those two I'd say Nebraska, but I haven't seen either of them myself. I go back one post and suggest "watch something on Netflixxx or VoD". Maybe now is the time to start catching up on Spring 2013 films you missed.
