EDIT: Also, does the roku also play files off a computer such as AVI and MKV? Because that is the kind of functionality that would be the tits. I know Boxee has that.

No, Roku does not speak to your computer. I can see the appeal of that functionality.

I can see the appeal, but I don't need it. MY PS3 has everything I need though, it is really the best multimedia machine I've ever had, and it speaks to my computer, if I ever needed that.

The PS3 is great, but it doesn't have MKV capability, which is very annoying.

If I even knew what MKV capability was, I'm sure it might be.

You can work around that if you use something like Tversity to set up a computer on your network as a media server. It's really simple. PS3 recognizes it automatically and then you can play any file on that pc through your ps3.

Prepping for class tonight - my first day of spring quarter.  Only 72 days 'til summer break!

The problem is it then gets the computer to decode the MKV file, which makes it all very slow, at least with my setup it does. It would be amazing if the PS3 could simply play those files.

why not get an actual computer?

I assumed the goal was watching the video on a TV screen rather than a computer monitor.

I think he means why not get a computer to hook up to the home theatre system. Which is an option, but it's also an expensive option. And computers are loud.
