Hey, if it means I get to stick with the awesome PSN service without paying for it AND it's becomes Fort Knox, that's pretty win. Thanks, hackers!

And don't be so naive as to think that Live cannot be brought down. Of course it can, and I wouldn't be surprised if it has suffered intrusions you have not heard about, probably because the holes weren't left as open as Sony's were in this case and vital personal information wasn't stolen.

There's a difference between naivety and warranted confidence. 8)

Human oversight / error can exist anywhere, but it's not like there's only one possible layer of security (unless you're Sony, buuuurrn). Good security makes no assumptions and covers all angles to prevent unauthorized activity, so while your use of "intrusions" is vague, if an attack has no material result the security was successful.

To reiterate, if Sony's back-end wasn't so massively flawed, this never would have been a blip on our radar, it's just not that easy to "take down" a competently designed service, much less walk away with boatloads of sensitive records. The scary thing is how long it's taking them to fix it, which really seems to show how deep the problems go.

Actually, the length of time doesn't bother me so much. I'm sure the problems go deep, but I think the amount of time is purely down to them taking a ground up approach to solving this, which really is better than merely patching the exposed areas. What's less inspiring is the near lack of information Sony has been providing, but then what can anybody expect from a corporation, especially in an area with so little regulation? Not every company is willing to be as open as, say, Maple Leaf Foods was when they had contaminated food a few years back.

Being excited about a Big Boi/Modest Mouse collaboration. I'd like a whole album but a song or two would do. Long live the funk!

I'm so excited for the NFL draft to not be a thing anymore.

Feeling powerless and depressed. My first class's term paper deadline just passed. 1/3 didn't turn a paper in (it is worth 20% of their grade) and of those that did turn it in, 1/5 I'll probably have to take to task for plagiarism. These are my first cases in four semesters teaching.
