Dangerously funny : The Uncensored Story of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour - David Bianculli

John Barleycorn - Jack London
"Well it lacked certain elements that we need to market a film successfully. Suspense, laughter, violence, nudity, sex. Happy endings. Mainly happy endings."

The first chapter of this, 20 pages, is a masterclass in efficient world-building.

I've been getting more and more interested in that series. That sentence sold me. It's next up on my nook.

Just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It was endlessly surprising.

Ugh. Taking on too many books at once:

When you are Engulfed in Flames  Sedaris
My Year of Flops Rabin
Treasure Island Stevenson
Pearls Sells Out: A Pearls Before Swine Treasury Pastis

along with kind of reading Roger Ebert Great Movies III

My Year of Flops Rabin

What do you think of this one? Except for a few interesting bits of trivia, I've been disappointed so far (about a third in). I don't feel he offers much insight into these particular movies or the nature of flops or anything else, really. Not a fan of his writing style, either.

That being said, it's highly readable and it's about movies (yay!), so it can't be all bad.

I find myself having enough fun with it on the movies Ive seen...but his write-ups arent really the type that invite you to the party if you havent seen the movie (one of the reasons I love Filmspotting is that the reviews are still really interesting whether youve seen the film or not). The problem is, some of these movies are really really bad, and I don't have much desire to catch up with many of them.

I do get a chuckle from the drawn out and only vaugely related intros he gives to some of the films he presents.

About halfway through
