Setting up Google Chrome for quick Filmspotting Forum searches
« on: January 29, 2011, 02:15:20 PM »
I set this up a while ago and it's made my life a lot easier. Figured I share the process for those who haven't done something similar and find themselves frustrated by using the forum's built in search function.

Once it's set up all you'll have to do to run a forum search is type ff Last of the Mohicans in the address bar. It's effectively the same as going to google and typing site:filmspotting.net/forum "Last of the Mohicans" in the search bar, it just saves you a few steps.

Step One: open the Google Chrome options window.

Step Two: Click the Manage button

Step Three: Click Add

Step Four: Copy and paste the following three lines of text into the three blank fields:

Filmspotting Forum Search

ff

http://www.google.ca/search?source=ig&hl=en&rlz=&q=site:filmspotting.net/forum+"%s"&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&oq=

Step Five: You're done! Hit ok, close, close.

Now it's time to test. Open a new tab, and type ff Jumanji in the address bar.

If it's working right it will automatically recognize you're doing a Filmspotting Forum search and look like this:

Hit Enter and voila!

Hopefully that's helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.  :)

Can this be moved to Announcements or something, and also made sticky? Thanks!

A similar set up works in Opera as well.

Go to Manage Search Engines
Click Add...

and add the same 3 bits.

Wow..
A great discovery in an unexpected place :o

It worked on a Mac, too!

I've been a Safari/Firefox user, but I didn't know how useful Chrome was until now :)

Thank you very much for the great info!

Method for searching within a single thread:

example google search:    site:filmspotting.net/forum "Write about the last movie" vera drake

Keep in mind, if you're using the        ff "Write about the last movie" vera drake       method, it puts an extra set of quotations around the search, which you'll need to remove. Kind of a nuisance, but yeah.

Alternate Method (as taught to me by a wise forum member)

Hit the "print" button while veiwing a topic.

Then hit ctrl+f and search that way.

Note: If the thread is really large (like 100+ pages) I've noticed that the "print" request usually times out before ever displaying the thread. Also, I suspect that hitting "print" for large threads is fairly taxing for the server.

Yeah, please only Print the smaller threads. Trying to Print a 300-page thread is likely going to 404 everyone.

I think I'd love how awkward it'd be, or how awkward it should be.
