7. Once Upon a Time in the West

Once Upon A Time In The West

Yah, could you two elaborate on your opinions?

I was bored and shut it off after like 45 minutes. Even though it has Henry Fonda :(

I don't think I can ever take Bondo's opinion seriously anymore.

I'll post my old mini-review, with the caveat that it's one of many films I plan on giving a fresh look:

Quote from: me
Tremendous disappointment after Good Bad Ugly.  Bloated and boring, with little of GBU's flair or humor.  Jason Robards is no Eli Wallach, Henry Fonda is no Lee Van Cleef, and Charles Bronson is no Clint Eastwood.  The characters weren't as fun and the story wasn't as compelling.  The slow shots that in GBU built tension here only tested my patience.  Even the music pales in comparison.  Really a major letdown.  Rating: 5

Some good stuff, but Toy Story 3 stands tallest. Once Upon a Time in the West in second place.

Is there a reverse echo in here?

Excited to hear that you'll probably be revisiting Once Upon a Time in the West in the near future, MartinTeller. Some things to keep in mind for then:

Bloated and boring...

This is wrong.

...with little of GBU's flair or humor.

This is wrong.

Jason Robards is no Eli Wallach...

This is wrong in the scheme of things but debatable in this particular instance.

...Henry Fonda is no Lee Van Cleef

This is wrong in the scheme of things but debatable in this particular instance.

...and Charles Bronson is no Clint Eastwood.

This is debatable in the scheme of things but wrong in this particular instance. Seriously wrong.

The characters weren't as fun and the story wasn't as compelling.

This is debatable but most likely wrong. The implication of there being a huge enjoyment and engagement gap between the two films is most certainly wrong.

The slow shots that in GBU built tension here only tested my patience.

This can't be wrong because it's subjective. That being said: wrong.

Even the music pales in comparison.

This is wrong.

Really a major letdown.

Objectively, wrong; subjectively, wrong-ish.

Rating: 5

This is about right assuming you mean it's the fifth best film of all time. Or thereabouts.

That's not far off from where I would place it on my Top 100, and so pix, enigmatic and infuriating as he can often be, will always remain in my good graces.
