"Cedar Rapids" & the state of the comedy
« on: February 13, 2011, 02:05:44 PM »
"Cedar Rapids"? No thanks. "Juvenile & raunchy"? Of course.

Personally, I'm sick of "juvenile & raunchy". It seems that is the only kind of comedy Hollywood knows. Granted, I have a particular taste of comedy, but this garbage that is churned out of studios every year is old. The Hangover, The Hangover 2 (this year), Cedar Rapids, Hot Tub Time Machine, Get Him to the Greek, Hall Pass (this year), Take Me Home Tonight (this year), etc. etc. etc.

It's as if there is no true creative comedic talent in Hollywood so they simply milk a formula dry. I'm to this point: if it's "raunchy & juvenile" they won't get a dollar from me. The comedy genre flat out sucks right now and it's a real shame.

End of rant. Steps down from soapbox.

Is that the type of humor in Cedar Rapids? Hmm, I haven't watched trailers but I figured it would be different. Will probably still check it out on Friday when it opens here. I like Ed Helms a good deal.

The trailers point to yet another raunchy romp. On the newly posted podcast Adam notes that it is "juvenile & raunchy).

Im fine with raunchy humor if its good. I dont know how Cedar Rapids is, but it looks all right.

If you are going to moan at the present state of comedy, Id say No Strings Attached, Just Go With It, or The Dilemma are more viable targets

Sounds good. Throw all of that crap in  with it. Each movie you mentioned is pretty raunchy as well.

My top live action English language comedies of 2010:

1. Exit Through the Gift Shop
2. Greenberg
3. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
4. Made in Dagenham
5. The King's Speech

Not a bad group.

Of course Hollywood studio comedies suck.  Most Hollywood studio movies suck.

Cedar Rapids looks like the comedy my Dad would make if he was trying to appeal to "kids these day" (i.e. in the right direction but completely out of touch).

The Filmspotting review was very positive.
