The clips I've seen from it look so ugly and depressing.

There is a rather lengthy heartwarming sequence between father and daughter in addition to other light and comedic scenes and moments in the movie that range from Randy playing videogames with a neighbor to banter between Rourke and Tomei's characters to shopping for a present to funny sex, etc.  Plus, the movie ends on a positively cathartic tone with a tinge of melancholy.  Personally, I don't categorize the movie as depressing overall (what's depressing is subjective).  And some of the lighting is very pretty.
