List of Shame
« on: April 01, 2011, 09:59:20 AM »
HOW TO JOIN:

1. Look at the last post in the thread that contains someone's List of Shame.

2. Reply to the thread, picking one movie from the list in Step 1.  That person now must watch that film.

3. In the same post, provide a list of 10 (more or less) movies that you should have seen but haven't.  These can be canonical films, films that your friends keep bugging you to watch, the DVD you just can't seem to find the motivation to watch, whatever.  How you make your list is your business.  A site that many people find useful is ICheckMovies, which aggregates several different canonical checklists, and can integrate nicely with your IMDb ratings.

4. Submit your post and wait for the next one to dictate which movie from your list you will watch.

5. You MUST watch that movie!  Violators will be prosecuted.

OKAY, I WATCHED THE MOVIE... NOW WHAT?

1. Write a review of your movie-watching experience and post it in the List of Shame Reviews thread.

2. Make a new reply to this thread.

3. In your post, include a link to your review.

4. Include a new dictation for the previous poster in the thread.

5. Include your updated List of Shame, with a new film replacing the one you just watched.

MISCELLANEOUS STUFF

* Anyone can jump in at any time.

* Anyone can quit at any time, although it makes you a coward and a weakling.

* If you do quit, you can come back whenever you like.

* There is no deadline.  You can take your sweet time to watch your dictation, or you can rush right to it and jump back in for a fresh dictation.

* When you post your List of Shame, it's nice to include a brief explanation of each entry... why you included it, your expectations, why you never watched it, whatever.

* You can only have one dictation at a time.  That is to say, if you have been dictated a movie, you cannot jump back into the rotation and dictate for someone else until you have watched and reviewed your dictation.

* HAVE FUN

I'll start us off.  I composed my list by going to ICheckMovies and looking for checklists where I have a "Gold" award (i.e., almost completed).

1. Dodsworth (checklist: "1930s") - Looks okay.  I like some Wyler.

2. One Way Passage (checklist: "1930s") - If nothing else, it's short.

3. Mutiny on the Bounty (checklist: "1930s") - I'm on a boat!

4. Beau Geste (checklist: "1930s") - Not a big Gary Cooper fan, but Wellman is sometimes good.

5. The Little Foxes (checklist: "1940s") - Looks good.

6. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (checklist: "1940s") - Doesn't look that good.

7. I Remember Mama (checklist: "1940s") - Not "I Dismember Mama"

8. La grande guerra (checklist: "1950s") - I liked Big Deal on Madonna Street

9. Watch Out for the Automobile (checklist: "1960s") - Haven't seen much Russian comedy

10. The Lion in Winter (checklist: "1960s") - No excuse.  I've heard nothing but good things.

Oooh, nice list and thanks for organising Martin

I tempted to dictate Beau Geste, but as you've not seen The Lion in Winter you're getting that to watch.  Have fun.

Here's my 10.  I've got a film for each decade with a few more queued up behind the scenes ready to go when these get picked:

Proper Charlie's list of Shame

1 -  Intolerance (1916)
2 -  Nosferatu (1922)
3 -  City Lights (1931)
4 -  Bicycle Thieves (1948)
5 -  Paths of Glory (1957)
6 -  Bande ŕ part (1964)
7 -  The Exorcist (1973)
8 -  Grave of the Fireflies (1988)
9 -  American History X (1998)
10 - Downfall (2004)

What'll it be?  Surprise me.

Hi, ses. You should watch A Woman Under the Influence. It totally has two of the best performances ever.

This is my list. Mostly based on favorite directors. I'm wondering what I should watch next from them. The last one is a film I've had from netflix for a while.

LIST OF SHAME

No Greater Glory Frank Borzage, 1948
King Lear Jean-Luc Godard, 1987
The Savage Innocents Nicholas Ray, 1960
No Fear No Die Claire Denis, 1990
Tea and Sympathy Vincente Minnelli, 1956
No Such Thing Hal Hartley, 2001
City of Sadness Hou Hsiao-Hsien, 1989

Including the Filmspotters #1 choice from the top 100 performances!

Please note a slight change to the rules in the first post.  There is now a separate thread for L.o.S. reviews.

Sandy, I so want to dictate Spirited Away to you, but when I saw Sunrise on your list I knew what I had to dictate. It's my #4 movie of all time, so I hope you enjoy, Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans.

My list of shame per iCheckMovies overall top unchecked list for me,

1. Pulp Fiction
2. Apocalypse Now
3. M
4. The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring
5. It's A Wonderful Life
6. The Best Years Of Our Lives
7. Amelie
8. Sullivan's Travels
9. Memento
10. Andrei Rublov

As for reasons, I don't have any individual reasons, these are just movies I haven't ever gotten around to, or in the case of a couple of them I haven't watched them again since I started keeping track of the movies I watch.
