I'm with sdedalus. Bay isn't so much underrated as overbashed. The Transformers films ain't no good but most of his others are entertaining and have really good action. The Rock is an awesome movie.

Yup.  He's also great with color.

Sometimes he does it during lunch break. Wait, was I not supposed to reveal that?

Watching a Michael Bay film is akin to being raped visually, so you're better off being virginal.  ;)

I don't think that's much of a secret.

I think the bashing is proportional to the amount of money his films rake in.

You have got to be kidding me. Oh wait. I forgot that THE DARK KNIGHT and the HARRY POTTER + LORD OF THE RINGS series have been universally panned by critics and audiences alike! MY BAD.

No, it's because he uses incredibly obvious ways of drawing in a audience (explosions, 80s nostalgia, hot slutty women, Military fetishizing) and uses this as substitution for interesting storytelling.

Oh, I didn't mean it in that sense at all. Let me rephrase.

Of the guys churning out stuff like he churns out, the type of stuff with the obvious attractors you mentioned, he gets a proportionally fair amount of bashing to the amount of money the films make (i.e. more than anyone else because his films get seen by more people than anyone else's in that realm).
