It has been way too long since I saw any of these films (other than the Hellboy ones), I need to revisit them. From memory, I thought that Blade II was really fun, but lacking in character development, Mimic was garbage, The Devil's Backbone was a bore and Cronos was interesting but very flawed. I don't like the Hellboy films though.

I've not seen Pan's Labyrinth the whole way through.

I rewatched both Hellboy films over the last week. They are both flawed, but HBII is definitely superior and it has a few scenes that really took my breath away. The Director's Cut of Mimic still isn't amazing but it is much better than the theatrical and it crucially feels like a GDT film rather than a facsimile. Blade II definitely is lacking in character development because he doesn't seem interested in the character of Blade too much, rather it's a platform for his imagination to run wild on and I think that's what makes the film work so well. Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone are top 100 for me and Cronos wouldn't be far behind.

The Hellboy films are visually interesting, which is obviously where del Toro excels, but empty elsewhere. I agree with your take on Blade II, I liked it for completely different reasons to the first Blade, but they both still worked for me. The third one was just terrible though.

I really should get onto a complete viewing of Pan's Labyrinth, for some reason, the couple of times I have tried to watch it have always been interrupted. Probably should rewatch Devil's Backbone too.
