The dresses are an important aspect of talking about the importance of image in propaganda and the Capitol's shallow aestheticism. The internal hesitation and conflict on Katniss' part is because she's not a true believer and is somewhat pragmatic and is asking the question, "is fighting really the best solution if it means the loss of massive lives" and "what are we fighting for exactly?" The first book is a brilliant exploration of imperialism, and developed world materialism and reality TV disconnect from real human suffering. The third book is a brilliant exploration of the real and often futile function of war. It is very pessimistic.

I suggest people read this article about Collins (spoiler alert for third book) to see a bit where she is coming from. Maybe these themes didn't work...clearly the themes of Twilight don't work for a lot of people. But they really really did for me.

I get all that stuff, Bondo, but I got it in the first third of the first book. By the thrd book it's just tedious. And so tedious that it made the book genuinely aggravating. I've never had to get through a book before by constantly having to put it down and recollect myself.

Collins gets into a lot of detail and I appreciate the moral and ethical significance of the things Bondo mentioned, but she repeats herself on a number of occasions highlighting the importance of this or that when as I reader I'm already well aware of why it matters.

It's a small complaint. The core story is strong, and I look forward to seeing how it wraps up (I'm about 1/3rd of the way through Mockingjay).

I'm about a 100% sure that the book series would be significantly improved had it been only one book of about 500 pages.

This is the wrong thread for this discussion, it can even be argued that the initial post that spurred this conversation was posted in the wrong thread to begin with since it was more of a review of Mockingjay than it was a What Book Did You Buy post. Can't someone just make a Hunger Games thread?

Whoa, FLY is right. I didn't even notice that I had started it in the buying thread rather than the rating thread. Good call.

Still probably good to use spoiler tags in this thread.
