Dottie Gets Spanked (1993)

I’m finally realizing how much Todd Haynes films are deeply symbolic, as if he can’t talk about things directly because they’re social taboo and so he codes it in cinematic language. This is about a boy’s confusion, shame and curiosity over initial sexual thoughts brought on by a popular TV show actress. Ambitious costumes and set design for such an early work, the film works better as early Haynes then on its own, where it’s too vague for the ideas to sink beneath the surface.

Wonderstruck (2017)

I don’t even want to write about this and admit my own feelings of stupidity. I don’t get what the film is going for, what is the function of the story, the two stories that play off each other. Our own Josh Larsen wrote, “even when making a family film, Haynes is as experimental as ever.” Experimental family film… this broke my brain, and for many it’s hardly as inscrutable as other Haynes films.
