Clive Owen's first real break. Directed by Mike Hodge (Get Carter). A really overlooked British film.

Love it.

Agree, amazing film, amazing performance.  This is the definition of a restarined and understated performance.  it almost borders on a mundane, but Owen can do so much with the drag of a cigarette or a brurst of kinetic energy (the Croupier interview scene).

Mike Hodges is an interesting director, I'd say I prefer his Brit Gangster Opus Get Carter, but this is a close second.

The thing about this film is that I actually don't understand it.

And yet it doesn't seem to matter.

It's totally compelling and yet having now watched it three times I'm not actually any closer to understanding anything about it. But the more I watch it, the more I like it.

I actually prefer it to Get Carter, but I can see why most people would disagree.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is also worth a watch, although it's definitely weaker than both Croupier and Get Carter.

I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is just tedious.  Its not terrible, but it takes TOO LONG to actually get anywhere. Then when it does, the film is pretty much over.  The photography was very good, but the fact that the film is entirely first act bothers me.

I'd say see it, but not to expect much story wise, the performances are the key thing.

Croupier gets my vote for a very solid, overlooked little film. This movie just proves how much Clive Owen can be a badass if he wants to.

This is the movie that made me fall so madly in love with Clive Owen. It was weird though because I watched the first half at a friend's  house and then wasn't able to watch it again until a few days later. I was disappointed in the ending, I guess, but only because I had so much time to dwell on how enthralling the beginning was. But I still really dig this flick.

Good call!

Agree, this is my favorite Clive Owen performance. I thought all the casino croupier
info was really interesting. Owens narration was fantastic as well.

This film is great, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead is not.  And it's far from anything near good.  A friend of mine actually worked on ISWID, he's got some memorobilia that the crew was given including a couple of matchbooks.  They're sick.
